Strange Vaginal Conditions

by Jason Stotts

In my studies on human sexuality, I occasionally come across strange facts.  In this post, I want to highlight  two strange vaginal conditions: no vagina and vaginas with teeth.

1. Congenital Absence of the Vagina – a condition characterized by absence of a fully formed vagina.  This could be an incompletely formed vagina, other reproductive organs, or complete absence of sexual organs.  An Article in the journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (January 1957 – Volume 9 – Issue 1 – ppg 48-54, available here) estimates that the likelihood is 6 in 500,000, although it is likely that it is actually higher since more women will be reporting the condition now with better methods of treatment.  The article explains the medical basis of the condition and some treatment options.

2. Vagina Dentata – a condition characterized by the presence of teeth in the vagina.  However,  this one is completely made up.  It’s a myth.  However, it’s very interesting from a psychological perspective that this myth is found in multiple cultures and therefore seems to be some kind of universal fear among men.  There was a recent movie made about it called Teeth in 2007 (IMDB).
